Big Tire Garage is the personal shop of Ian Johnson, and the home of the Big Tire Garage video series. If you like to see one of a kind custom vehicles be built in a true hands on/How To environment then this is the spot for you. I built my very first custom vehicle when I was 14 years old and fell in love with working on cars at a young age. Since then I have had many careers that revolve around the automotive world, I worked as a Transmission and Drive line specialist and hold both an Automotive Technician and Heavy Truck and Coach Technician Certificate.
I am a certified Transportation Technology and Welding instructor and spent just under ten years developing curriculum and teaching at technical high schools.
For the past 20 years I have worked in the television industry launching the most popular off road TV show on network TV TWICE; first Xtreme 4x4 on Spike TV, and recently FourWheeler on Motortrend Network.

Jeep JK LS Swap; Complete How TO
I always think that a V8 Swap is the right answer for any project, and when I started planning a V8 swap into my 2 Door Jeep Gladiator that is based on a 2007 Jeep Wrangler I knew that an LS would be the engine that I wanted to put under the hood.
This is a complete How To that takes you step by step through the process of installing an LS engine and 4L80E transmission into your 2007-2011 Jeep Wrangler JK

I have absolutely fallen in love with the 2005 Toyota Tacoma that I built on my TV Show FourWheeler. It started as just a simple build, but has morphed into a GREAT truck. ruclips.net/video/EueqEiUgqBA/видео.html I have done so much work to this vehicle including a V8 swap, a total frame replacement, and a custom overland kitchen setup in the bed. The only item that I have left of concern is th...

How to Become a Behind the Scenes Wrench on a TV Show, What U Joints to Use on a Jeep
I went back and forth on my V8 swap . I ended up with a 6.4 hemi and 8 speed swap from Dakota Customs . And Ian is write , v8 wranglers are awesome! I have about 20k miles on mine it it’s definitely worth it . I get the same mileage as the 3.8 … 14.5 -19 ish mpgs . This was one of the better install videos .
Thanks for watching...that swap sounds awesome!!
@@BigTireGarage the 8 speed is a game changer. 37’s 4:88’s and the 3:7:1 transfer case . It crawls great and rips stop light to stop light .
It's one of the best swaps yet. When my 3.6 fails. I'm definitely going this route. On my 2013 JKUR the only downside is that I have a manual tranny.
Outstanding video! Well done👍👊 Everything explained very well!
Glad you liked it!
As always Mr J You Rock 🪨
Thanks for the props
Dude... Turn your music down!
I put a 6.2 liter L94/6L80 combo out of a 2012 Denali in my 2011 JKUR about 5 years/65k miles ago. Great powertrain for the JK platform. Can I suggest turning your battery and TIPM lengthwise as it really opens up clearance and accessibility to that right bank. Plus allows a bit more airflow around the right head. I'm running GM OEM wiring harness to remain USEPA compliant and even made the OEM GM engine cover to fit. My goal was also to make it look and perform like it was OEM. I used the Motech MoCAN module to create that "handshake" between the GM ECM and the Chrysler BCM and everything functions like it rolled off the assembly line. I used OEM Trailblazer exhaust manifold to clear my suspension and they worked great, still uses OEM heat shields. I would suggest wrapping the fuel and vapor lines where they route from the right frame rails, around the fuel tank and up the back of the transmission as that area gets quite hot on those lines. I also used a NP241J transfer case with the 2.72:1 ratio. With the 4.02:1 first great in my 6L80 transmission, I don't miss that 4:1 transfer case at all. In fact, the gearing in my GM powertrain is similar to the stock JK Rubicon gearing ratios but with double the torque. Drivability is freakin' awesome, both on and off road. Drives like a Denali with a Jeep body on it and everything functions as designed. Utah has pretty strict emissions guidelines and it passed all USEPA requirements for Utah licensing. I'm running 4.56 final drive gears and with my 37" tires and 33% overdriven trans. my cruising RPM is 2k @ 70 MPH. Returns decent economy, better than the stock 3.8 liter and 42RLE combo on 35" tires. You're going to love it more each time you drive it. 👍 Mike
Thanks for all that info I will definitely look at all those suggestions...I like the idea of turning the TIPM and battery
@@BigTireGarage happy to help. Love your project videos Ian. Keep 'em coming. Mike
Why couldn’t you make a spacer to make up the inch and half you were short on the front driveline? Just curious
Probably could...but having the seiveshaft lengthened was only 200 bucks
LS Swapped my 2004 LJ because of your older vids from your Xtreme4x4 days.
Awesome!!

Wow, thanks!

Ok now start over and show how the average guy would do it on On his garage floor with normal tools and no lift
Been there....done that....
I did it outside in my driveway. Only thing keeping you from doing it is you.
That hair is whack
Wrong
@@BigTireGarage nah straight up look like a living thumb
Freaking great!! You rock Ian.
Thanks! You too!
Just as I’m getting ready to sell my JK 😂
Well....maybe you should keep it!!!
Your skills are unmatched, love this video! Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
I saw the Aqualu FJ45 cab in the background, gonna keep my eyes on that one.
You will see it on my new show Build for Offroad on Motortrend Discovery and HBO max
@@BigTireGarage Looking forward to it. Can we ask when the show will start airing?
@@BigTireGarage Watched the preview on Brenton Prod.
How you explained the wire harness and how the computers need to communicate with each other was extremely enlightening. I'm waiting until my 3.6 fails before I do a swap but I'm already planning what I want to do and will probably start collecting parts over time for when the time comes. Great video, thanks.
Thank you
What are your thoughts on iron block vs aluminum? I've been doing research on picking an LS for a swap and I've landed on the L92 because you get all aluminum, rectangle ports and I think forged internals but I get mixed info on that. Is there any particular reason you chose an iron block or did it just come down to price?
Price really...and not chasing HP or building a race car
I’m going through this and am curious why the 241c would not have been used?
The Rock Trac? I was concerned that the 4:1 with the v8 torque would be too much TBH unless I one ton swap it
I need this video, but for a 2012 5.3 LS into a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, and I'd be set! 😅
Sounds like a cool build
This one was chocked full of solid information, Ian. The huge plus was Zelda making her cameo; she's so adorable and looks just like our Gabby we lost 3 years ago so thanks for including her! Lastly two things; the burnout was epic and you better get some anti-aircraft radar and countermeasures in the shop. You were buzzed by a pterodactyl @46:54 which rivaled a B-52 in size. Looking forward to the next video and seeing Zelda make another cameo! Cheers!
Zelda makes every video better...we actually filmed a promo for HBO Max with her this week...we are very excited
@@BigTireGarage That's awesome! Congrats on the promo!
so clean👍
Thank you! Cheers!
The lightinf in your shop is Great!! I want to know where you bought the lights
They are @hyperlight high bay LED's
MotorTrend must have you contractually neutered. Sucks to watch you pander for the ads.
What are you talking about?
Question- whats the difference between the truck based vortec and an LS? Or what year did they switch from vortex to ls
The big block "vortec" lasted a while...the old school small block vortex I think was replaced by the LS in 98?
Vortec = iron block LS out in. Trucks. It’s the same engine architecture. Usually they have iron blocks and big ugly intakes with longer runners.
Is the input swap the only thing that needs to happen to the JK case? I’m looking at swapping one into my 05 Silverado 1500 to get rid of the front&rear slip yokes for a one ton swap.
Yes...and the adapter from Advance Adapters
Prbly better off with another Chevy case
Now we just need a few tips on how to tell our significant others why we’re spending so much time and money in the garage😂
👍
Do a diy hemi swap on a 13-18 jk lol asking for a friend and are you going to the pegon forge jeep jam this year?
I should be there for one day
Never mind. I live in California, where we have no rights. Thanks Democrats
Nice job!!
Gomanche Project Tee Shirt 😜🙏
I think I should finish it before I make a T Shirt
@@BigTireGarage I'm here for it!
That's probably the best video you've ever done, Ian, great job! Only problem, I'm now saying pivotybit like it's a new word. 😂
I feel that you aren't building without inventing new words
Been doing a ton of research to swap my 08 JKU. Glad to have this to go along with it.
Good to hear
I'd like to do this in the future but I won't have a lift. How hard would it be with just a cherry picker?
The JK is tricky because unlike the previous generations of Jeeps the feont end does not come off....you would have to install the engine seperate from the transmission
Not that much harder. You just have to crawl under it more. You do not need to install the engine separate from the transmission. I’ve done it. On my 07
6:05 my 12 year old walks bye, pauses, backs up and says, "thats a 2 door gladiator 😮"! I want it." 😅 you are safe for now Ian, as his dream color is vibrant blue or red.
*sigh. Jessi 😢
Just got done with my LS swap in my Jeep. Everything about it is more pleasant than the 4.0 it replaced. AC is crazy cold, temps are always under control, HO alternator and PS pump. And of course the power. No MPG hit either.
What a great detailed video one of your best. I love that Jeep .
I appreciate that!
Another great video 👍👍
Thanks for the visit
If those knotty headed paint lickers would simply get back to building the STR64.0 this wouldn't be a thing IMHO.
Nice job. About how many hours did you have in it?
If I had all the parts and no hiccups, I think I could do the swap in about 30-40 hours
Seems like you had to do a lot of “custom” stuff for the engine to work like factory in a vehicle that it doesn’t come factory in. From my little bit of research, I’d say the hemi is more plug and play. Americas most wanted 4x4 makes kits that essentially “bolt in”, making it super easy to swap. And I believe the company is called Motech, and they specialize in LS swaps. Last I saw they got it to where you only need 1 computer, and basically made a more plug and play style to their engines as well. Of course,I’m no expert, and you absolutely know a hell of a lot more then me when it comes to anything vehicles. But those 2 companies are for sure the number 1 companies for plug and play / easiest to do engine swaps for the JK.
I looked at the Motech kit and it was "in my opinion" the same amount of work....and was considerably more money
Still dont understand why you didnt use the after market fan you had on your FourWheeler TV show.
It wasn't the best chpice...after talking with RPM Xtreme they suggested the PWM fan as a better choice....so that is what I went with
@@BigTireGarage sorry made a mistake meant to ask about aftermarket radiator.
Did not fit with the new fan
Thanks for the new content Ian! Lockjaw has my vote for the next T-shirt!
Love that idea!!
Was a great video very informative thanks from Ontario Canada cheers 🍻
What’s the best transfer case for a 6l80 in your opinion? L92 6.2 Denali donor
Depends on what you plan to do with the truck....the NP241 JK case is a great option...if ypu want to go with a hard core off road package...get an Atlas...or NP205
